Last Saturday, Tourmaline State Park hosted the Tenth Annual Summer Longboard Classic,
a contest organized by the Pacific Beach Surf Club. Travis Long (club
president), Richard Steadham (newsletter editor) and other club members
worked diligently and around the clock to ensure the event’s success.
Their work paid off. Surfers from all over SoCal and from various
different clubs showed up at Tourmaline to catch a few rides and
exchange some laughter. Tony, Gary, and ‘The Professor’ from the Swamis
Surf Club banded together and went out on an almost all Swamis heat,
virtually dominating the wave count. And Lorraine, the team leader of
the La Jolla Shores Surf Club, had quite a spurt of excitement when her
raffle ticket was picked for a Travis Long longboard, painted by artist
extraordinaire Wade Koniakowsky. These and numerous other clubs put on
the jersey and left their footprint at this year’s Tourmaline Longboard
Classic.
And the surf (although not epic) came a long way from last year, which
was borderline flat and blown out. This year, waves were in the
knee-high range, but had enough push to deliver some enjoyable rides;
the winds were blowing hard from the NW, but PB point did a great job
sheltering Tourmaline and keeping it from blowing out. These conditions
and the high-spirited crowd of surfers from all over SoCal made this
year's Longboard Classic quite a remarkable event.
