Call to the Wall 2009

The Surf Club Contest Organized by the Malibu Boardriders Had Plenty of Attractions, Including Various Paddle Races, a SUP Slalom, Sunshine, Raffle, Tandem Surf, And (not to Forget) a Perfect Little Wave

“I look forward to surfing with five other people in the water, especially at Malibu knowing that it does get crowded, perfect and fun,” said Bonga Perkins.

MALIBU, CA -- Despite of the lack of south swell pushing into the first point at Malibu, the historic break still had plenty of right-handers peeling along the shoreline. During some heats, competitors were pushed to scratch for minuscule waves, but there always seemed to be enough for surfers to glide down the line. In its best moments, the surf delivered waist/chest-high waves, but those were too far in between.

But the slow waves did not deter the crowd from having a great time. “I look forward to surfing with five other people in the water, especially at Malibu knowing that it does get crowded, perfect and fun,” said Bonga Perkins, the current longboard world champion, who flew from Hawaii to gather with the (surfing) tribes. “If you can score fifteen minutes by yourself, and if you keep advancing 30/45 minutes goes on from there, that’s part of the fun.”

In addition to the world-class small waves, the sunshine made the event all the more attractive. Despite of a drizzly Saturday, the sun came out on Sunday, practically the whole day, giving yet another great excuse to hangout at the beach on Father’s Day. “It’s really fun and the weather is really nice. And even though the waves are not super overhead or anything, everybody is getting along and we are all having a good time on the beach, soaking up the rays, “said Desiree Etzel, from Encinitas, CA, a member of the Swamis Surf Club. “It’s a great excuse to hangout, I think.”

And as if surf and sunshine weren’t enough, the event had two other thrill rides for those looking for more entertainment: paddle races and raffles. This year the paddle races had various different formats, from the usual relay race with club members of different age groups to a stand-up paddle race where paddlers zigzagged around a course. Then continuing with the thrill of luck all throughout the gathering, the raffle had always a smiley face trotting down the beach to claim a prize. As Etzel put it, the Call to the Wall 2009 was “a great excuse to hangout.”
