San Diego, CA (Nov. 30, 2008) - The Windasea Surf Club (WSC) Coalitoin Contest was held on great conditions, with a total of eighteen different divisions scoring in the surf.
On Saturday, as the swell started building, there were already plenty of waves to go around. The surf was in the 3-5ft. range, winds were light and coming from the NW, and the swell direction hitting the Shores at about 270 degrees. On Sunday, as the swell continued to build, the surf peaked between 4ft. and 6ft, while winds and swell direction remained relatively the same as the day before.
During the low tide, the conditions were a bit more challenging, but there was still plenty of good surf. “As the tide got lower, the wave still held its shape,” said Pablo Smith, 56, from the Pacific Beach Surf Club and owner of Soul Grind Skate Shop. “You had to be selective, but there were some good corners.” Smith, who surfed in the highly competitive masters division, scored second place in the final heat and also carried home the raffle’s top prize, a brand new Bessell shortboard.
Billy Harris, 22, from the Oceanside Surf Club, was another one who appreciated the good surf. “I do a lot of contests and usually the conditions are pretty bad, but the surf stayed clean all day,” said Harris. “The conditions held up pretty good and allowed for basically every trick.” The surfer from Oceanside scored a first place in the men (20-29) division.
Now even though Smith and Harris had a memorable weekend riding the waves at the Shores, no one had more fun than the briskly grommets. Their stoke was indisputable, even during the award ceremony. When lining up to receive the results, Travis Long, president of Pacific Beach Surf Club, before reading the final heat sheet, asked one of the grommets, "who do you think came out at the top?" His answer, which echoed much of the event’s overall spirit, was: “It doesn’t matter, we’re friends.”
