NSSA Explorer, Church '08
Thursday, 18 December 2008

skobayashiswe5.jpgThe Southwest Conference Explorer Season event #5 was off and running at Church in the San Onofre State Park.  The competitors were hungry to pick up valuable 5-star rated points at the midseason contest as momentum builds towards Regional and National Championship qualification.

Day one of the contest on Saturday started out small with weak 1-2 foot waves but a bump in swell arrived for Sunday and provided the competitors with fun chest high waves.  San Clemente local Shaw Kobayashi was unstoppable in familiar waters at Church and locked up two outstanding wins, one in the Men’s and then an impressive come-from-behind victory in the Juniors.  He posted the top scoring ride in the Juniors final earning an excellent 8.0 on a left where he blasted a series of vertical backside turns.

Kanoa Igarashi was again a contest standout racking up another tremendous double victory performance in the Boys and Menehuene divisions.  Amazingly enough, this was the sixth time this season that the 11-year-old rising star has pulled off double division wins. With 19 total wins to his credit, not only does Igarashi have an overwhelming shot at smashing the current record of 21, he is possibly headed towards one of the greatest victory runs in the sport as there are numerous events still remaining on the regular season schedule.

After his win streak was snapped at the last event, Rick Takahashi was back in the winner’s circle taking the Masters final for his seventh win of the season.  But in the Seniors, Rusty Phillipy was red-hot, ripping the Church rights and handily scored the win by a 5-point margin over Takahashi.  In the Women’s, Chloe Buckley put forth a solid performance winning the final with a solid 14.0 point total.  Harley Taich took the Girls victory for her third win overall this season.  Mike Gillard claimed a huge double triumph in the Super Seniors and Longboard divisions driving his win total up to five for the season.

The NSSA West Coast Conferences are proud to have support from No Fear, Nike 6.0, Huntington Surf and Sport, Surfing Magazine, WaveWatch, Sex Wax, No Fear Energy Drink, Channel Islands Surfboards, S4 Optics and the Sugar Shack.  The NSSA is a member of Surfing America, the ISA-recognized National Governing Body for Surfing in the United States.

COMING UP IN CALI: The Southwest Conference Open Season will be off and running at infamous Seaside Reef in beautiful Cardiff-by-the-Sea for event #6.  The NSSA west coast will welcome in 2009 on January 3-4 with Southwest Conference Explorer Season event #6 at Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach.
