EXPLORER SEASON EVENT #10

NINTH STREET, HUNTINGTON BEACH
MAY 2-3, 2009

CONDITIONS: SMALL, WAIST HIGH SHOREBREAK PEAKS ON SATURDAY INCREASING TO CHEST HIGH SETS FOR SUNDAY’S COMPETITION.

surf-huntington-pier.jpgThe 2008-09 Southwest Conference Explorer Season finished with event #10 at Ninth Street in Huntington Beach.  Colton Larson finished out the season taking the conference title in the Men’s division with four wins on the year.  Josh Morse kept his nose to the grindstone throughout the season and the work paid off as he finally claimed his first career NSSA victory in the Juniors.  Shayne Nelson clinched the conference title in the Juniors putting up solid results which included two wins and five finals appearances.  La Jolla’s young up-and-comer Jacob Halstead is swiftly rising up the competitive ranks collecting his first NSSA conference title in the Boys division with five victories over the season.

Jacob’s rising skills and solid contest results earned him the conference's Most Improved Surfer award for the 08-09 season which he shares with his La Jolla buddy Skip McCullough who has been improving at a rapid pace in NSSA Open and Explorer comp this season.  Kanoa Igarashi’s magnificent season continued as he nailed another double triumph in the Boys and Menehuene’s driving his victory count up to an unbelievable 30.  Kanoa still has a shot at a couple more wins with one event remaining for the regular season-the Open Season make-up at Ninth Street this coming weekend.  Rick Takahashi kicked up the heat in the Masters and Seniors categories this year dominating the divisions with a major 14 win-record while handily collecting both conference titles.  Rusty Phillipy scored the only perfect 10 of the Ninth Street finale clinching the Super Seniors conference crown with seven total wins over the season.  Rusty also came runner-up to Takahashi in the Seniors overall rankings.  It was a brother duel all season with Mike and Terry Gillard battling back and forth in the Longboard division.

Mike’s victory at this event sealed the deal for the conference title so Terry will have to wait another year, but there’s always Westerns and Nationals!  In Women’s competition, Natalie Anzivino took her first conference title.  13-year-old Harley Taich had a sensational season posting an impressive nine total combined victories in the Women’s and Girls divisions.  Taich earned her first conference title in the Girls division and it looks like this youngster has a bright future ahead.  Harley along with Explorer Junior’s standout JD Lewis will both be presented with the distinguished NSSA Sportsmanship Award for their display of exemplary character in and out of the water.  Also, a big high five from the NSSA staff and competitors goes out to Mr. Diamond (Joe's dad) for the awesome BBQ on Saturday!

The NSSA West Coast Conferences are proud to have support from No Fear, Nike 6.0, Huntington Surf and Sport, Surfing Magazine, WaveWatch, Sex Wax, No Fear Energy Drink, Channel Islands Surfboards, S4 Optics and the Sugar Shack.  The NSSA is a member of Surfing America, the ISA-recognized National Governing Body for Surfing in the United States.
