Volcom's Starfish Surf Series River Jetties
Monday, 24 November 2008

1_riverjettiescollage1_560.jpg The third stop of the Starfish Surf Series proved to be completely nuts, kicking off under sunny skies with some insane waves and a huge turnout. The day was rolling along splendidly until all of a sudden Mother Nature came through like a strike of high voltage electricity. Suddenly we were dealing with white out fog, at one point we have had someone wading around in waist deep water yelling out colors for the judges. After about an hour or so the fog cleared and the day continued on with some slightly windy but still completely rippable overcast conditions. All in all it was a pretty radical day, with everyone going crazy making this event another awesome one.

2_riverjettiesair2_560.jpgThe Girls Division was the first final in the water and they proved to be a hard act to follow. Kaleigh Gilchrist kicked the heat off strong with a massive score. For much of the heat, Kaleigh held the reins. But soon Erica Hosseini came on like a bat out of hell posting two solid scores. As the heat wound down Erica Cook finally found some energy after being coated in baby powder and shaving cream all day and nabbed a good score. Unfortunately for the two Erica’s there wasn’t enough time to catch Kaleigh who grabbed a final third high score, putting the nail in the coffin. For her brutality in the lineup, Kaleigh walked away with the win, a Riviera complete, custom hand painted trophies and a grip load of prizes. Annisa Galindo, Leah Pakpour, and Krystal Shannon rounded up the rest of the final.

3_starfishcollage3_560.jpgThe Groms never cease to impress with their seemingly endless amounts of energy. Even with all the hilariousness these kids provided on the beach, once in the water it was pure business. It’s almost scary the intensity with which the little guys hit the water. Jack Boyes was firing on all cylinders, nailing two solid scores right off the bat. Dane Mycrstal made a push of his own with a solid score early in the heat. However the real action came down to the last 5 minutes, with a flurry of last minute action. Kevin Shultz and Colin Moran both came up with some solid scores of their own. However in the end, no one could match Taylor Clark who backed an already solid score up with a wave which he obliterated, grabbing him the win, a monster remote control car, Riviera complete and more prizes than he could carry on his own. 8 year old Tyler Gunter put on an amazing performance, making his first final and to top it off had the whole beach rolling laughter with his shenanaigans throughout the day.

4_riverjettiesteddy_560.jpgThe Juniors final the hit the water like a pack of enraged steroid induced freaks. It was a flurry of airs, hacks and all around shredding that was about to go down. Christian Saenz jumped to an early lead with a solid mid range score. Chase Wilson also grabbed a couple good scores early in the heat. However, just like the groms, the real action came in the back half of the final when Jared Cassidy threw down two massive scores right before the buzzer. For his last minute heroics, Jared walked away with a custom hand painted trophy, Riviera complete, and prize bag the size of a garbage bag filled to capacity. Shayne Nelson, Erik Heimstaedt, and Bobby Okvist brought up the rest of the final.

5_riverjettiescollage2_560.jpgThe Pro Am division is always nuts at for the Starfish events. Teddy Navarro looked like an early favorite, winning the Electric Volt Thrower move of the day in the Repo-charge, with an incredibly electrifying high voltage aerial maneuver. However he still fell short of making the final, which is a testament to the level of ripping that goes down in these events. Brandon Tipton came out of the gates strong with a solid score right off the bat. Michel Flores got a series of solid scores around the middle of the heat but as the time wore down it really turned into a battle between Brandon Guilmette and local Josh Hoyer. Brandon got two huge scores but failed to find a back up. Josh used his local knowledge to pick the right waves and managed to grab three solid scroes throughout the final giving him the slight edge of Guilmette. Mr. Hoyer walked away with 500 dollars cash, bragging rights till the next event, and enough prizes to fill a school bus.
