PRESS RELEASE Western Surfing Association and Gatorade® Ink Deal SAN CLEMENTE, May 22, 2009 -- The Western Surfing Association (WSA) is happy to welcome Gatorade as the official beverage sponsor of the WSA surf series. As part of the new agreement, Gatorade will support WSA surf events, including the West Coast Championships – WSA’s final event. “The WSA is a pillar in the progression of amateur surf competition on the west coast,” said Kenny Mitchell, action sports team manager with Gatorade. “As the oldest amateur surf competition series in the country, they have a deep rooted history in surfing and are incredibly dedicated to the advancement of local amateur west coast surfers.” Gatorade’s sponsorship reflects the brand’s focus to provide support to amateur, grassroots and local-level events, and also fits with the product’s essential purpose – providing optimal sports drink hydration so athletes can feel and perform at their best. “To see Gatorade support surfing is great,” said Greg Cruse, Director of the Western Surfing Association. “Our competitors are under the hot sun for hours during a contest, and when they paddle out for their heat, the last thing they want is to be fatigued because they didn’t hydrate – hydration really is a critical part of surfing.” Established in 1961, the WSA is the oldest amateur surfing association in the country and the largest on the West Coast.
