Western Surfing Assn Church Beach, San Onofre State Park 9 - 10 May 2009
Wow! Over 300 competitors in 148 heats in two areas for 20 hours! A great season for the Western Surfing Association came to a climactic close at Church Beach San Onofre on May 9 & 10. New sponsors Gatorade, The Gidget Foundation and NewEra Caps stoked out the crowd with lots of free swag and delicious grinds all weekend.
The TransWorld Surf crew were on hand amusing the masses with beach games and give-aways. Ocean Minded ran a beach clean-up to make sure we leave the beach cleaner than when we got there.
The surfing was amazing all weekend with everyone battling for bragging rights and coveted slots into the SIMA Surfing America USA Championships, August 25 – 30, 2009 at the Huntington Beach Pier and slots in the most prestigious Junior surfing series in the United States – WSA Prime. 4 man heats and the BeachByte Computer Scoring System were utilized with 1977 World Champ, Peter “PT” Townend, calling the action all weekend.
The Challenged Athlete Division was truly inspiring with incredible performances by San Diego quadriplegic Patrick Ivison and Beijing Paralympics Gold Medalist Rudy Garcia-Tolson.
