Field Trip & Environmentalism
Saturday, 11 October 2008

img_8676.jpgMiddle-school students, from four different districts, went down to LaJolla Shores last Friday for a day of fun and information.

A total of six schools -- 3 from Tijuana, 1 from Poway, 2 from SanDiego Unified, and a charter school -- participated in a green event, whose purpose was to inform students about some of the water-related environmental projects based in San Diego. The gathering was organized by the Sister Schools of San Diego, ‘a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting cross-cultural understanding byconnecting schools around the globe’.

img_8679.jpg Liz Hinkle, the representative from the group, was also able to draw on the support of several for-profit and non-profit organizations, like San Diego County Water Authority, San Diego Coast Keeper, San Diego Stream Team, Reef, SDSU, and Surfrider Foundation.

The kids first listened to experts on various water-related subjects, ranging from water monitoring to water quality preservation, and then were divided into different groups, where they learned from volunteers who engaged them with live experiments and poster presentations.
