The Young Guns of Shaping Perpetuate the Craft

A massive chunk of foam and an efficient imagination play a role in unique shaping event presented by SIMR Surfboards

younggunshapers.jpgSan Diego, Ca., (August 3, 2010) -- -- Keeping the culture and craft of surfboard design alive and thriving: one of Sacred Craft's main goals. To that end this year Sacred Craft is bringing four younger shapers, each under 25-years-old, into the shaping bay to determine who has the mad skills. The event is titled "Young Guns of Shaping" presented by SIMR Surfboards.

This event will be a great test, as this is no ordinary starting point. Each shaper will be given two hours to shape a surfboard out of a massive 10' 10" stringerless chunk of polyurethane foam courtesy of US Blanks. They can shape any board they want, with a catch. The finished board must be under 7' long. One of the keys to this event will be the shapers ability to 'find' the surfboard within the massive chunk of foam, and to do so efficiently. The shapers use their own tools. The finished blanks will then be judged by legendary San Diego shaper Rusty Preisendorfer.

"We are really excited for the Young Guns of Shaping, as this challenge will not only be fun to watch, but it accentuates custom surfboards, which is what SIMR is all about," said Christopher Clark, Global Team Manager of SIMR Surfboards. "Probably most surfers do not understand what a tough task these four Young Guns have been given. These guys will have to be very judicious with their time."

This years' Young Guns of Shaping are: DJ Kane (DK Surfboards), Ryan Burch (Hansens), Tyler Warren (Hobie), and Gary Strahle (Fresh Pineapples). A check for $500 will be awarded to the winning shaper.

Tickets to Sacred Craft are just $10 and include a free year subscription to Transworld SURF; u12 free.

All paid attendees have a shot at four brand new surfboards being given away; including a special 'early bird' offering between 10am - 11am. Be early!

ABOUT SIMR SURFBOARDS

SIMR Surfboards was founded in 2007 when two San Diego shapers came together under one label. It wasn't until 2009 that SIMR, INC. was established and a collective shaping team decided to build a brand. SIMR was initially founded on three core commitments. (1) 100% Custom Surfboards. You will never see our surfboards on the rack in some surf shop. We don't make a board unless it is for a particular surfer. (2) Environmental Commitment. As surfers, we are the most aware of the footprint we leave behind. Our strong commitment to alternative inputs is only part of our environmental commitment. We also recognize our responsibility to offset our footprint through the support of groups like 1% for the Planet and the Surfrider Foundation. (3) Women In Action Sports. We made a decision that we would equally support the growth of women in action sports. These commitments are visible in the events we support and the team we have chosen to represent our brand.
