October 09, 2007, Richie Cravey surprised us all by pulling off yet
another one of his stunts. As usual, this noserider extraordinaire from
Encinitas was getting all his toes on the nose, only this time he was
clutching in his hand a freshly caught fish.
While sitting in the lineup at Cardiff, Cravey noticed something slowly
moving under his board. To his surprise, it was a white sea bass! The
fish's sluggish swim around Cravey's board clearly indicated that it
was injured. A closer inspection revealed a notable deformity on its
belly. The deformity was most likely the result of an attack by either
a larger fish or, perhaps, a violent struggle with a fisherman.
But without giving much thought to it, Cravey dove in to catch the
fish. Displaying quite a talent as a fisherman, he not only grabbed
hold of the sea bass, but also carefully and firmly grasped it by the
mouth. And although the sea bass didn't have much life left in it, it
was lively enough to flip and flap on Cravey's hand in attempt to
regain its freedom. This, however, was quite unsuccessful, due to the
young man's well-polished skills as a fisherman.
Then Cravey, freshly corralled fish in hand, turned his surfboard
around and started making his way toward the beach. Of course, paddling
a surfboard with one hand while holding a lively fish with the other is
no mean feat. Nevertheless, despite the difficulty, Cravey was able to
make significant progress.
And the lad's incredible exhibition of multitasking didn't stop there.
On his way to the beach, he rode not one, but a handful of waves. The
scene was incredibly intriguing. Cravey was walking up and down his
board -- cross stepping, hanging five and ten -- all while the sea bass
was still battling for liberation from its captor's hand.
This unusual juggle of fish and noseride certainly showcased Cravey's
exceptional talents. But more than that, it may have earned him an
unprecedented honor: that of being the only surfer ever to execute a
truly fishy noseride.
