Doheny Collector Club: 'The Big One'

bud_brown_1.jpg Everything is coming together for a terrific event on December 6th at Doheny State Park, area A and B, 7:00 A.M. until noon (or thereabouts).  Yes, I will send directions a week before the meeting.

The International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame awards are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. The inductees are Ben Aipa, Phil Edwards, Tom Morey, Mike Eaton, and Woody Brown.  You are encouraged to bring their boards for display.  We are hoping for the usual celebrities to be present: Gordie, Munoz, Carl Eckstrom, and hopefully, Pat Curren.  The "Greek" (Bob Bolen) and Mike "Mickey Rat" Ester really knock themselves out for these awards and put a great deal of effort (labor and $$$) into it.  Mike Ester makes some classic trophies for the icons of surf.

You will be able to display and sell anything you want.  The State Park system knows we are officially "vendors" and will not mess with us.  It is due to Bart Tucker's efforts and the club display at Surf-A-Rama.  It solidified our status with the State Parks and we ingratiated our club with the array of wooden boards that were shown.

Bart Tucker, Erwin Spitz, Cary Weiss, and Steve Collins are really putting this together for the club.  We have a ton of stuff dedicated to the raffle and we will have a silent auction to boot.  Two very nice old surfboards (G&S, Challenger) will be raffled.  The club has paid for these boards at a minimal fee from Steve Collins and Erwin Spitz collection (really a donation to the club).  Several other members have committed nice items too (including some surfboards).  We will run through the inventory after the event with the donor's names.

The event will take place rain-or-shine.  The awards will be presented under a large awning and you can certainly bring something to hide under if it rains.

The barbeque will include hamburgers and hotdogs, beans, chips, and some drinks.  Your membership pays for this when you re-enlist for another year of "pure fun."  You will also get one "free" raffle ticket with your renewed membership.  Bring along some friends and encourage them to join.

The park fee is $400 for your general information.  The club pays for the food as well.  If you ever wonder where your dues are going, we spend every dime of it on the newsletter, website, inventory of tees, hats, and stickers, and events.  The idea is that we break even at the end of the year and not build up a surplus.  We will be right at that mark this year with very little in the Longboard Collector Club account.  Therefore, in order to continue with a great schedule, we always need your support to keep things going.  If you don't know, the Board of Directors, President, and Treasurer are purely voluntary and all of your money is spent on club stuff, not people (unlike your money managers and stock brokers).

I would add that we now have a club postcard printed by Modern Postcard (Jim Toya-brown, donation) and the artwork was donated by Ron Regalado (Disney Photo-Graphics specialist and artist).  You will be given one of these to get autographs on at the Doheny event.  They are large and suitable for framing (very special).

There will be other announcements as we get closer to the event.  I sure hope to see you all there with smiling faces and hungry tummies.

Keep surfing, Roger Mann (President)
