Our
local surf community is fortunate to have so much talent residing in
its midst. In this instance, I'm not referring to the obvious
conclusion one might think, but in the artistic expressions exemplified
in two dimensions by two of our region's fine artists: Wade
Koniakowsky, surf painter and David Pu'u, surf photographer.
On Saturday evening, March 15 at the Waveriders Gallery in Sorrento
Valley, an exhibit of both their works was on display at this new and
exciting art venue. Each had a number of recent works hanging on the
walls for visitors not only to enjoy, but purchase as well. In Wade's
case, he set up a small working space at the back of the gallery and
produced several paintings over the course of the evening to the
enjoyment of all who watched. He not only worked efficiently with his
brushes on canvas, but also graciously answered numerous questions as
he worked, explaining the techniques he uses and the philosophy behind
his approach to painting. He describes himself as an impressionist
painter, and as such, one who is always trying to find the magical play
of light and dark on the subjects he paints to make it visible through
the stroke of his brush. It is said of Wade's work that the viewer is
transported to "dreamlike tropical lineups and far-flung exotic island
locales." His work on display Saturday evening lived up to its billing
and as a self-described impressionist, left an impression indeed on
those attending.
Mr. Pu'u was unable to be at the opening, but his recent work hanging on the gallery walls in his stead
went a long way in making up for his absence. His photography seeks to
show the energy found through moments in time all surfers can relate to
and is captured in stunning--and many times-- vivid, surreal color.
From watery shots of the view looking out from the tube of a shimmering
wave to one in which the juxtaposition of a surfer riding an enormous
wave and a helicopter hovering overhead, his work draws the viewer into
a world of exciting and sometimes dangerous beauty. Rounding out the
exhibit and standing like sentinels guarding the two dimensional works
in frames were several examples of collector-worthy surfboards by
industry greats such as Dale Velzy and Hobie Alter, plus art created on
surfboards by the aforementioned Wade Koniakowsky, Bob Penuelas of
Wilbur Kookmeyer fame and others.
