Life Rolls On at La Jolla Shores
Friday, 07 March 2008
happy_barrels.jpgThis Sunday, March 9, at 8am, Robbie “Happy Barrels” Nelson will be leading a group of paralyzed surf enthusiasts out into the water for a fun and inspiring day of surfing.

Nelson—the generous man behind Happy Barrels Surf School—has organized this event for the Life Rolls On Foundation, which began as a result of Jesse Billauer’s heroic return to surfing after a devastating surfing accident that left him a quadriplegic. (You likely will recall the telling of Jesse’s story in the surf film Step Into Liquid.)

Life Rolls On is dedicated to promoting awareness of spinal cord injury and empowering those who suffer from it to live life to the fullest. Jesse has been a pioneer in the movement to get those of limited mobility back in the water, and on Sunday he will likely be out there making it look easy.
Skilled swimmers and surfers are urged to volunteer either to paddle along with the participants or to act as spotters as they ride their way to shore. Just show up at the Shores between 7:30am and 9am.

Just as last year’s event at Cardiff was rewarding for all, so this year’s promises to be an overwhelming source of joy, both for the courageous surfers and the volunteers.
