Surfer Finds Rocket Warhead
Saturday, 06 October 2007

surferfindrocketwarheadpic1.jpgOn Friday, September 28, 2007, veteran surfer and surf shop owner, Bob Long, discovered a rocket warhead floating around the crowd at Tourmaline. The Hazardous Materials Incident Response Team (HIRT) was called on the scene to haul the warhead away. Thankfully, nobody was injured.

Long was surfing his stand up board in front of the pump house around 8am when he decided to go for a paddle to PB point and back. On the way there, he noticed a dark colored canister floating next to his board. Intrigued, he got closer to it. Using his paddle to investigate the object, he poked the canister twice but found nothing alarming about it. Searching for other signs, he noticed some writing on it but, without his glasses, wasn't able to read it. Still curious, he decided to wrap his leash around the object and tow it over to the crowd to show it to his friends.

Chris Rule was the first of his friends to take a closer look at it. Upon reading the words '2-3/4" Rocket War Head', his first reaction was to think that Long was pulling a prank. But Long insisted that this was no joke. At that point, Rule, in panic, threw away the object and informed the crowd of the danger in the water.

Terry, a Navy sailor, who was also in the water at the time of the incident, spoke out and told the crowd that there wasn't anything to fear. For according to Terry, the rocket warhead was missing a particular component, without which it cannot be detonated. This put some of the boys at ease until the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department appeared on the scene.

The San Diego Fire Department arrived at the scene a few minutes later and took over possession of the object. The canister was then placed in a black cylinder and hauled away without anyone getting hurt.
