After
two years of legal maneuvering, Greg Miller and the Tourmaline
Tailgaters Surfing Association have been given permission to erect the
Tourmaline Canyon Surfer’s Memorial. To fund the project, the
Association has sold bricks ($200 each) that will make up part of the
deck surrounding the structure; each brick will be inscribed with a
personal message from its donator. On Saturday, Feb. 23, the memorial
committee will hold a lottery at Tourmaline Canyon Surf Park to
determine the location of the bricks in relation to the coming
memorial. In other words, every brick-holder has an equal chance of
getting into prime position.
The vision of the monument, according to tourmalinememorial.com ,
is “to recognize all surfers, young and old, male and female, the
famous and the unknown. The Surfer's Memorial is for all of us who are
passionate about the sport of surfing and Tourmaline Canyon Surfing
Park.” What’s more, the memorial is meant to celebrate the unique
spirit of camaraderie found among the locals at “Tourmo.” That spirit
is summarized well at the bottom of the memorial plaque: “Surf well,
spread aloha, share waves without judgment.”
So in the coming months, keep a look out for the Surfer’s Memorial, coming to a Tourmo surf park near you!
