If you go to Surfrider’s official website, credit for starting the organization is given to “a small group of visionary surfers in 1984” – but who have remained nameless for a long time. Now, as Surfrider completes its 25th year, its time to recognize those “visionary surfers” and their historic contribution to the world of surfing.

Who were they? What was their vision? And most importantly, how can today’s surfers draw inspiration from the determined efforts of those early days? These questions and more will be answered during a highly entertaining and motivational media presentation by Glenn Hening, founder of the organization, during a presentation July 17 in San Diego.

Glenn formed a team that included a legendary Malibu surfer, surfing’s first professional environmentalist, a Santa Cruz kneeboarder, a Baja veteran and world traveler, a key connection to the surf industry, and a Ranch surfer who dreamed up the logo.

These “visionary surfers” set out to create something unique in the history of surfing, and their fascinating story includes:
·     Where the name came from – and why the word “Foundation” was so important;

·     The indirect connection to surfing’s most famous rebel, Mickey Dora;

·     Opening Surfrider’s first bank account with $41.90;

·     The story of the logo – and why it still is such a powerful symbol;

·     Brainstorming at the Olympics – and Bruce Springsteen shows;

·     A key component: The Baja Assistance program;

·     The controversy of building new places to surf;

·     Who was Surfrider’s first member – and

·     The “take no prisoners” attitude that resulted in Surfrider’s first victory protecting Malibu only a few weeks after the founding documents were signed.

It’s a story that will inspire today’s surfers everywhere in the on-going effort to secure a better future for our waves and beaches – and it’s a story that will ring true for Surfrider members as they look forward to the next 25 years of supporting Surfrider’s mission.
