The
Memorial Dedication has finally come around and Tourmaline surfers wait
anxiously for the coming Saturday, November 1st, 2008. The
"Tailgaters", the oldest band of surfers roaming in those parts, have
finally been able to complete their Tourmaline Canyon Surfing Park
Memorial, which is about to be dedicated in just a few days.
The feat came after several years of bureaucratic acrobatics and
talented maneuvering on the part of some Tourmaline locals, among whom
is Glenn Paculba, owner of Star Surfing Company Surf Shop. Paculba and
his “gang” have been working on this project for years. And with a good
community support, and the occasional arm-twisting red taps of local
government, the surf shop owner was able to get the project both
approved and completed.
The memorial will be located on the narrow strip between the bathrooms
and the fence facing the beach. Each brick (4" x 8"), containing a
custom script on it, was purchased for $200 as part of a fundraiser to
finance the memorial project. There are predictions of a big turnout
and some of the San Diego political figures are expected to be on
scene, as well as the droves of cameras that usually follow them. So,
if you plan on going, given that parking is limited, some insiders are
suggesting an early arrival.
