SAN DIEGO, CA -- On Friday (June 26, 2009), Surfindian had a bustling crowd and myriad artwork on display for the Mattson 2 Benefit. The event was a fundraiser for the parents of twin brothers Jonathan (drums) and Jared Mattson (guitar), the duo of Mattson 2, a jazz band from California. Their parents, Jan and Arlene have recently been diagnosed with critical medical conditions and an auction was held to help them cover their medical expenses. Over 50 artists donated their work and all the proceeds went for the Mattson family.

The turnout was the best that Surfindian has seen so far, according to Chris Rule, Surfindian Owner. There were people from all over California, some coming from as far as the Bay Area, like Jay and his wife, who were part of the group organizing the gathering.

The local crew also didn’t disappoint, showing in full force. Jennifer Smith, Pacific Beach local and longboard world champion, came to show her support, as well as enjoy the sound bites of the Mattson 2. With the twin brothers playing on hand and the beautiful crowd throwing their bids, the night unfolded into one of the highlights of Surfindian history and Pacific Beach nightlife.

Despite of the tragic reason for the gathering, the cheerfulness and enthusiasm of the crowd filled the room and, as their number kept growing, the people silently expressed their support while strolling into the Pacific Beach boutique. The night started with an early performance by the Mattson 2, which then led into the silent auction, where bidders wrote in their offers. At about 9pm, Rule climbed onto a chair to announce the auction winners, having to demand silence several times as the chattering continued. Then wrapping up the night, the Mattson 2 returned to the stage, finishing with a stellar and heartfelt performance.
