San Diego, CA (Nov. 21, 2008) - Thousands of walkers for the Breast
Cancer 3-Day Foundation flooded San Diego’s Coastline wearing pink
outfits and expressing plenty of enthusiasm and creativity.
From Nov. 20th and running (or more accurately, walking) through the
22nd, the breast Cancer 3-Day Foundation is bringing over 10,000 people
to San Diego, including about 5,000 walkers and 6,700 crewmembers.
During the three days, these walkers and crewmembers will be stretched
along the San Diego Coastline, from Del Mar to Petco Park, raising
awareness to the fight against breast cancer and bringing in an
estimated amount of over $10 million dollars in donations.
“Registered walkers,” says the Foundation’s website, “must be 16 years
old by the end of 2009 and agree to raise a minimum of $2,300 for the
Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the
National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, in order to walk.” And
crewmembers, albeit not required to walk and fundraise, have to commit
to four, rather than three, days and must “attend Crew Day on Thursday
before the event.”
The 60-mile long legwork mobilizes people from various walks of life,
many with their own tragic stories to share. Norma Jimenez has been
involved in the walk for 3 years now, the first she walked and the
second and third she volunteered. Her aunt’s death lead her to join
hands (or should we say, legs) with the 3-Day Foundation and since then
she has had a lot to share about the event. “It’s moving and
inspirational. And it’s very amazing and supportive to see even
Leukemia patients walking. It’s an amazing experience. There is nothing
like it.”
Jesse Grant lost her 29-year old daughter to breast cancer three years
ago and six months later her older daughter was diagnosed with the
illness. “Getting here and talking about it is the only way that’s
going to help,” says Grant. And sure enough, by walking and talking
these pink-clothed enthusiasts have raised a remarkable amount of
awareness and brought in millions of dollars for the cause. As the
weekend unfolds, San Diego’s Coastline will be awash in pink walkers,
many with a tragic story to share but all with an ardor to make a
difference.
