Wednesday,
February 6, promises to be a pivotal day in the ongoing struggle to
save Trestles and much of San Onofre State Park from the intrusion of
the proposed Foothill-South toll road. The California Coastal
Commission (CCC) will be hearing an application and giving a ruling
concerning details of the road’s construction. According to the folks
over at the Surfrider Foundation, the fate of Trestles will not
ultimately be decided by the CCC’s decision tomorrow, but the result
will be a major determiner of momentum in the case—either in favor of
Trestles or against it.
Recently, the Transportation Corridor Agency—the organization behind
the toll road—gained a powerful ally in Governor Schwarzenegger. That’s
right. The Terminator endorsed a project that, if implemented, will
likely lead to the termination of Trestles. The advocates against the
road therefore face an even tougher battle, for the blessing of the
governor is no mere trifle. Nevertheless, according to Jim Moriarty of
the Surfrider Foundation (in an interview conducted by surfline.com ,
the toll road faces a lot of bureaucratic opposition. Indeed, some of
the CCC’s own staff are against the project. And many coastal cities,
including San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, and Oceanside, have
passed resolutions opposing it. The fate of Trestles, thus, does not
rest wholly in the bone-crushing hands of the Governator. There is
still plenty of hope for San Onofre.
This hope has spurred the Surfrider Foundation to plead with lovers of
Trestles to show up in Del Mar tomorrow and demonstrate against the
toll road. They have t-shirts, signs, and lunch ready for all who are
willing to come and support; they have even rented buses and arranged
carpools for those commuting from San Diego or San Clemente. To find
