Cayucos Pier, CA -- Monstrous surf and incredible conditions had been the rumor leading up to the weekend. With the Mav's contest scheduled to run, we know it was going to be big for Cayucos Pier, but would it be to big? As the competitors slithered through the parking lot and down to the beach for sign ups, it was obvious the question on everyone's mind was, "Is the Contest on"? After a quick head count of who wanted to surf and who didn't it was unanimous that Goldfish competitors were fired up and ready to take on what the day had to offer.
At first light the waves were already pumping and by the afternoon it nearly doubled in size! As predicted the swell was going to increase throughout the day, so it only made sense to run the Groms and Girls first thing before it was maxed out. Nic Hdez was patient and found the waves he needed in the Grom final to earn himself the win along with a boatload of prizes. Keenan Reeser scored her first win on the VQS tour and was all smiles as picked up enough points for a qualifying spot into the 2010 VQS World Champs. The Juniors division was swept by John Wilson as he found the right combination and capitalized on a win. In the Pro-Am Division Tom Mowry stuck an amazing air drop and followed it up with a huge hooking backside turn, earning himself the Electric Volt Thrower move of the event. But the first place $500 cash prize would be claimed by the local boy Ryan Blackburn as he smoothly locked into the waves he needed to claim the win on his home turf.
