SAN DIEGO, CA – On Saturday (December 5th, 2009), K5 Oceanside is opening its doors as an exclusive stand up paddle (sup) shop, offering a barrage of models, accessories, and apparels, including everything from boards and paddles to hats and t-shirts. To mark this landmark step on the stand up paddle retail front, there will be a grand opening party, with several SUP enthusiasts on hand, including shapers, athletes, and pioneers. It is an open event and it’ll be held on Friday, December 5th, 2009 from 11am-4pm at the K5 Shop in Oceanside, CA.

Although Hawaii is credited as the birthplace of the modern stand up paddle movement, San Diego has quickly become the catapulting stage for the sport, where the combination of calm waters, bays, lakes, and lagoons has taken the popularity of stand up paddle to new heights. As California’s third most populated region and with an unparalleled outdoors landscape, the southern most point of the golden state is poised to take the lead on the growth of this new paddling modality.

This prospective growth is shadowed by the local history of the sport, dating back to approximately 2002, when a San Diegan with islander ties brought the sport from Hawaii, eventually to turn it into a world sensation.

The industry, either in response or in anticipation of the sport’s growth in the region, is taking steps as bold as the sports’ growth. San Diego County, the home of K5 Oceanside, can now claim not only to have arguably the world’s largest stand up paddle retail location, but also to have the world’s first stand up paddle television show. My Local Lineup, a San Diego-based surf media company, has launched an all stand up paddle TV show, which airs every third week of the month on iTV San Diego, channel 16, featuring all the different modalities of the sport. The outdoors landscape, population size, and proactive industry are arguably putting San Diego County on the driver’s seat of the stand up paddle revolution.

Hansens SUCKS!
written by jrobinson760 , December 28, 2009
I just want people out there know that i had the worst experience at hansens surf shop this weekend. I was asking a "kid" behind the counter about some wetsuit repair products and he gave me the worst attitude. He looked at me shocked that I was trying to save a couple bucks and fix my wetsuit myself. I'm a grown man and deserve a little more respect. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THAT PLACE. I've lived to much of life to take crap from a punk ass grom. And that's whats up.
