Hot Buttered Soul was a revolutionary four track LP released by Isaac Hayes and the Bar-Kays in 1969. A few months later, 20-year-old Terry Fitzgerald, fresh from a Hawaiian winter season and a big fan of funk and soul rhythms, decided to borrow the name for his surfboard company. But all three words didn’t quite fit on the rainbow sash logo.

The movie focuses too much on one form of surfing, but without much of a commentary or narration to spice it up. So you end up with scene after scene of what looks like pretty much the same, over and over again: 70's shortboarding. Now, it does have some really good shortboarding from the 70's. But it calls for some additional production elements to notch it up. With that said, there are some scenes that break the monolithic presentation, but they are just too far in between. So, this is a 'SO-SO' film, but which I do not recommend.
