Good option for beginners with very little ocean experience and low expectations. If you just want supervised bumming around with fellow novices, go for it. The price is unbeatable -- $57 for students and $72 for nonstudents for 9 hour-and-a-half sessions -- and board rental is included. It provides incentive to get out every week, and it's nice being with other nincompoops who are just as bad at surfing as you are. You don't have to mess with boards because the instructors bring them to the beach for you. You basically get aquatic babysitting with boards provided, which can't be completely discounted, but may be a disappointment if you were expecting a lot of instruction. The instruction time consists of a five-minute talk prior to entering the water. The student-teacher ratio is bad, so it's hard for two instructors to give adequate attention to fifteen or so people simultaneously bumbling about in the surf. I've gotten more surfing tips from random people out in the water than some of the sessions I attended. You don't go past whitewater until the last two sessions or so. If you are in Southern California for just a short time and want to tell your Great Aunt Sally that you have become a surfer, it might be a good choice, but it's not so good if you have already have experience bodysurfing or bodyboarding. Note: classes fill up quickly, especially in spring and summer quarters. Winter quarter sessions will mostly be canceled due to rain. A 200-yard swim test is required in order to enroll.
